CHESTERTON — A 2-year-old boy was injured in a reckless driving crash when a driver tried to speed past another car in downtown Chesterton and collided with two other vehicles.

The crash occurred on Calumet Avenue just south of Broadway Monday morning shortly before 11 a.m., according to a Chesterton Police Department crash report. The toddler, in the backseat of the reckless driver's car, was in a front-facing car seat secured to the backseat with only zip ties, not with a seatbelt.

Officers arrived on the scene to find two vehicles blocking the lanes. The suspect approached one police vehicle, banging on the driver's side before jumping into the back seat, according to a police report. Another arriving officer, believing he posed a threat, drew his taser, and ordered the
