WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Wake County judge has ruled that the man accused in a series of shootings along I-40 is incapable of standing trial, according to a report from WNCN .
Court documents show 24-year-old Andrew Thomas Graney was declared “incapable to proceed” and was committed to Central Regional Hospital for treatment.
WNCN said the reason behind the judge’s order is that Graney has “ inadequately treated schizophrenia” and had harmed himself repeatedly while in custody .
Graney had been housed in the mental health unit at Central Prison for about two months prior to the ruling due to what court records described as “unstable” behavior.
