Kauai’s own Tumoana with Nicholas Kaneakua as its director, or kumu, was named overall winner of the two-day Heiva I Kauai that wrapped up Sunday at the Kapaa Beach Park.
“It was real busy,” said Cheryl Shintani, who was chaperoning the volunteers from the Key Clubs from the high schools. “Especially on Saturday when the heiva combined with the fire knife competition. It was a long day that didn’t end until past 11 p.m.”
Sintani said what added to the color was the amount of costuming from the individual dancers on Saturday.
“It was very colorful,” the advisor said. “I don’t know if they had rules about each dancer having to create their own costume, or if they could get help in putting the costume together.”
Adding to the color and excitement were the cultural tents and the variety of
