HANNIBAL (WGEM) - The Hannibal City Council had the first reading of a bill that would put Proposition 1 on the ballot, which asks voters to approve a one-half percent sales tax.
According to city officials, funds from the sales tax would be used specifically to cover the costs associated with public safety, such as police and fire department needs.
Voters will have the final say on the new public safety tax at the polls on Nov. 4.
Another proposition, Proposition M, would shift the authority of appointments to boards and commissions currently handled by the city manager to the mayor, if approved. The explanation for this change in authority was that appointments should be handled by the elected office of the mayor.
