AUSTIN, Texas — Facing daily fines, potential fraud charges and the threat of arrest for leaving the state, Texas Republicans are upping the pressure on Texas House Democrats who have broken quorum and left the state to delay consideration of a proposed new congressional map.
The House Democrats left the state to delay and at least temporarily block a planned vote on a proposed new congressional map. Because the Democrats were not present, there were not enough members present in the House chamber, meaning the House could not move forward with the legislation.
On Sunday afternoon, at least 51 of the 62 Texas House Democrats flew from Austin to Chicago , with several others traveling to Boston and Albany, New York. Seven of the House Democrats stayed behind in Austin.
