A fiery head-on crash on a dark stretch of Sandy Spring Road in Montgomery County left one man dead and another seriously injured early Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed.

The deadly wreck happened around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 in the 4500 block of Sandy Spring Road in Burtonsville, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokesperson David Pazos said.

Upon arrival, crews found two heavily damaged vehicles — both with drivers trapped — after what appeared to be a high-speed, head-on crash.

Firefighters and medics worked urgently to extricate both men, but one was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The other was rushed to a local trauma center with serious injuries, Pazos said.

Photos from the crash show one red SUV launched onto a grassy slope with its frame split and pinned by rescue supports. The second vehicle was barely recognizable — a mangled pile of engine block and steel surrounded by debris on the roadway.

The crash prompted an extended closure of Sandy Spring Road while officials worked to clear the scene and begin their investigation.

The names of the victims have not been released, and police have not commented on the cause of the crash as of late Wednesday morning as the investigation continues.
