The 1981 Okemos girls basketball team lost its opening game to Holt in a double-overtime nail-biter.
Little did that group know that would turn out to be its only setback en route to a Class B state championship and a 49-game winning streak over two seasons.
The team's amazing run earned it a spot with the 2025 class set to be inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame on Aug. 7.
"This was a special team. We had all the components of what you need to win a championship," said Sue Tucker, one of the standout players for the 1981 Okemos squad. "This was a team that was never going to give up. That word wasn't even in our vocabulary, and from the beginning of the year we knew what we were capable of accomplishing."
