BPD announced today it's moving its current radio system - which anybody with a cheapo scanner or even just a Broadcastify link can listen to - to an encrypted system on Saturday.

The department says it will relay the six channels it now uses for different parts of the city to an online service that will re-broadcast them - with a delay - online. Missing are other channels used by officers to communicate directly with each other.

BPD says the new system will mean better quality and coverage for officers and will prevent "bad actors" from either interfering with police transmissions or using them to get a head's up that the cops are on the way - which it added is also a reason for introducing a delay in the rebroadcasts:
