ATLANTA – Fort Stewart, an Army base in Georgia, was on lockdown Wednesday because of an active shooter incident, a 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY.
“Fort Stewart is in a lockdown status due to an active shooter incident … Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing,” installation officials said in a post to their official Facebook page.
The Hinesville Police Department, which serves the town adjacent to Fort Stewart, declined to answer questions about the incident.
The incident happened in an area of the south Georgia installation associated with the 3rd Infantry Division’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, a tank unit that returned from a European deployment in the summer of 2024.
