ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday, August 6, that changes to New York's discovery laws will go into effect on Thursday, August 7. You can watch the full announcement in the player above once it uploads.

Hochul was joined by Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly, New York State Police Superintendent Steven James, and Director of Crime Victim Services at St. Peter's Health Partners is Lindsey Crusan-Muse. Discovery is when both sides in a legal case exchange evidence—like documents or witness statements—in a timely manner before trial.
