Researchers at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) have published a detailed analysis of 3D culture methods for colorectal cancer (CRC), offering a new resource for cancer researchers aiming to build more accurate lab-based tumor models. The study was published in Scientific Reports .
Three-dimensional tumor models are increasingly seen as essential tools for studying cancer biology and drug responses. Unlike traditional two-dimensional (2D) cultures, 3D multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS) better replicate the architecture, cell-cell interactions, and oxygen and nutrient gradients of real tumors. However, producing consistent and physiologically relevant 3D models remains technically challenging, particularly across different CRC cell lines.
