John le Carré’s novels were the gold standard of late twentieth-century espionage fiction, and hold their own in the canons of snooty literature, too. I’ve written about his first screen adaptation, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold , and I’m now watching the 1979 series Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy and next week its sequel, Smiley’s People .
