BP, one of the Calumet Region's largest industrial employers, recently made its largest oil discovery in 25 years, as it shifts back to focus on its core business of oil and gas production and refining.
The London-based energy giant, which runs the BP Whiting Refinery on the Lake Michigan shoreline, discovered a new oil reservoir in the Bumerangue block in the Santos Basin about 218 nautical miles from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. BP found the reservoir at a water depth of 2,372 meters in the Atlantic Ocean.
“We are excited to announce this significant discovery at Bumerangue, BP's largest in 25 years," BP Executive Vice President of Production and Operations Gordon Birrell said.
