A 50% U.S. tariff on Indian goods threatens to end friendly U.S. and India trade relations.
At issue is India’s reliance on Russian oil, which it can purchase at discount prices, as well as Russian fertilizer. President Trump cited a “national emergency” in announcing the tariffs, since the oil purchases help to finance the ongoing Russian and Ukraine war.
Currently, oil prices are down about 5% for the week. The tariff move follows months of failed talks with India and the U.S. to reach a trade agreement.
