CHESTERTON — Connor Taylor has never been a fan of oceans, lakes or marine life.
"I don't like underwater creatures; I stay away from that area," Taylor said.
However, the Indiana University Northwest biochemistry student stepped outside his comfort zone and interned with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) this summer.
As part of his internship, Taylor has focused on lab-based work. This includes growing native freshwater mussels in petri dishes that'll be reintroduced back into the wild, as well as sorting through samples of lakebed filled with algae and non-native mussels.
"It's been a good learning experience," Taylor said. "On top of being able to actually help with the projects in the lab, it's been very informative as well."
