PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man charged last year in connection with an elaborate mail theft ring has been convicted, according to acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

Darren Camacho, 33, pleaded guilty Wednesday to theft of mail by a postal employee and conspiracy.

Camacho admitted that, several times a week between March 1, 2023 and June 26, 2023, he and six other workers sorted through mail at the U.S. Postal Service processing and distribution center in Providence looking for bright-colored envelopes, according to Miron Bloom.

Miron Bloom said Camacho and the other workers would stuff the envelopes into backpacks and sneak them out of the Corliss Street facility, which handles roughly 3.5 million pieces of mail every day.
