Public broadcasting depends on federal funds to bring educational and informational programming to millions of homes across the country, but after Congress passed legislation eliminating more than $1 billion in funding for public broadcasting, over a thousand stations are facing an uncertain future, including Erie’s own WQLN.
"WQLN recently lost $1.2 million in federal funding. That is 40% of our budget. Our budget is just over $3.2 million, so it's a devastating loss and a very challenging time for us," said Alyson Amendola, WQLN Vice President of Advancement.
The cuts in federal funding led to the closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which has been distributing funds for NPR, PBS, and local public broadcasting stations like WQLN since 1967.
