LENEXA, Kan. -- A local city councilwoman’s eligibility to serve has been thrust into the spotlight following a police investigation spurred by false claims about her legal status. Claims advocates say are rooted in racial profiling and fearmongering.

Councilwoman Melanie Arroyo, who serves the City of Lenexa, said she believes the probe into her citizenship was a politically motivated attack on her and the immigrant community at large.

“These are political attacks against our immigrant community here in Kansas City and people are right to feel targeted or to feel scared,” Arroyo said.

The investigation was triggered weeks ago by a tip to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), based on an Op-Ed Arroyo had written months prior that mentioned her path to U.S. citizenship.
