GARY — A new face will be on the Gary School Board at its meeting later this month.

The Gary Common Council voted at its July 15 meeting to appoint attorney Angela Lockett to a two-year term on the school board.

The five-member appointed board has governed the Gary Community School Corp. since it exited state control last July . The city's mayor and council each have a pick on the board, with the Indiana secretary of education appointing the remaining three members.

Lockett, whose three children previously attended Gary schools, said she was honored that the council put its trust in her.

"I'm very happy to be given this opportunity," she told The Times. "I look forward to making a positive change."
