An apparent case of Powassan virus in a newborn baby on Martha's Vineyard is prompting warnings from health officials about the dangers of ticks.

The child, 1-month-old Lily Belle Sisco, is in serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital , where she was flown on July 24 after experiencing a 102-degree fever, seizures and viral encephalitis.

Shortly before she fell ill, the family had taken her out for a walk along a bike path in West Tisbury, observing a small tick on her ankle soon after.

Long lines of people were waiting for the ferry to Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday in Falmouth. One man in line, an island resident, told NBC10 Boston he was "concerned" after hearing about the possible infection.
