NEWARK - The late Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver’s compassion for seniors has created a full-circle moment, as residential housing strictly for seniors will be built in her former South Ward neighborhood, complete with a tax break from the city.
But what are the details of that tax break?
This housing project – which comes with a 30-year tax abatement from the city – is not being celebrated by all community stakeholders. Several Newark residents have expressed frustration with the lack of information on the financial agreement and questioned how the tax break directly benefits Newarkers.
