BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota faces a severe shortage of health care professionals, especially in rural areas. Nearly a third of counties have a shortage of primary care providers, and half lack sufficient mental health professionals. That is driving one organization to take action.

Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota is offering scholarships. Thirty in-state students will receive $2,500 scholarships, and one health care leader will receive $5,000.

“By reducing financial barriers, we can really help attract students and see how we can expand. It’s really a long-term investment in the sustainability of our North Dakota health system,” said Amber Blomberg, the executive director of Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota Caring Foundation.
