MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Mass. —

A Manchester-By-The-Sea police officer was injured after being struck in the head by a hammer during a response to a residential home for a person inside experiencing a mental health crisis.

According to a release posted to the department's Facebook page, officers responded to a home on Summer Street just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, for a report of a disturbance.

Officers arriving on scene spoke with family members who had fled the home. The family reported that there was a man inside the residence experiencing a mental health crisis and acting violently. Due to the potential danger, mutual aid officers from Essex Police were requested to respond and assist.
