WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — This is a wild story of survival, fear, and a neighborhood stepping up.

We're not naming the 71-year-old woman or sharing her address, but she spoke to WFMY News 2's Amber Lake off camera. She’s still shaken by what happened, but incredibly calm. She told us that if it weren’t for her neighbors, the man who broke into her home might still be out there.

Police say it all started just after midnight Wednesday, when 22-year-old Shawn Jackson broke into her home on Summit Street.

The woman said Jackson threw her around and even threatened to rape her. Realizing she couldn’t fight back, she told him, “You wouldn’t want your mother to go through something like this.”

She then asked if he was hungry and made him a bowl of chili.
