GATE CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Gate City hosted a special evening for its favorite dunk champion.

Matt McClung, a G-League professional basketball player, was honored in his hometown on Wednesday for his most significant career accomplishments and memorable moments with a community celebration.

The Gate City Frontier named three-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion McClung a "hometown Gate City boy." Leslie Crawford, Gate City Frontier board member, said McClung visited her classroom the first year he won the Slam Dunk Competition.

"I was a teacher, and he actually came and read to my kids, right before the state championship game, which I think speaks to who he is as a person and that same character that he had then in 2018," she said. "He has now, if not even bigger."
