WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wednesday, the Wyandotte County District Attorney announced it will pursue the death penalty for 38-year-old Shawn Harris, who is accused of killing Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy, Elijah Ming on July 26th.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, the state has not conducted an execution in 60 years, with both republican and democratic governors in Topeka over that span.

“We have it, it’s a very extensive process,” said Wichita defense attorney, Charles O’Hara with O’Hara & O’Hara Law Offices.

Kansas is one of 27 states where capital punishment is a legal penalty, but it has changed several time over a span of six decades.
