DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The man who survived a two-mile swim in frigid Lake Superior is speaking out Wednesday in an exclusive interview with Northern News Now.

Peter Joice was on his way to an annual fishing trip with friends at Isle Royale, but things took a turn for the worst when he fell off the boat into Lake Superior.

The captain of the boat was unaware Joice had fallen and continued forward.

“When I ended up in the water and I saw my boat trailing away I just kind of came to grips with the situation,” said Joice.

He said he was leaning on the wrong part of the boat and ended up in the water.

Joice knew right away that panicking could mean certain death.

“Keeping a cool head I think is important,” said Joice. “Panicking isn’t going to help any situation.”
