Tony Torrez, owner of Desert Dogs Outdoors, LLC, said his company will host its second annual Kids Fishing With a Cop event at Lake Van in Dexter, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 9.

Torrez said his company, which is based in Las Cruces, held its first event at Young Park in that city last year.

“We started off expecting 50 or 60 kids and we had 120,” he said.

Torrez said the Las Cruces event included food trucks, a deejay and about 100 fishing rods were given out. Giveaways at the event included backpacks, hot dogs, ice cream and soft drinks.

“Last year we got calls from Roswell and Dexter asking why not do an event here?” Torrez said. “I said 'Well, we weren't invited. They said 'Now you are,' so we did an event at Lake Van.”

He added there are plenty of incentives to show
