COLUMBIA — Gov. Henry McMaster plans to issue an executive order limiting the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program dollars, formerly known as food stamps, from being used to purchase junk food and sugary drinks.
The proposal, announced via McMaster's social media accounts Aug. 6, comes amid a push from multiple other red states to seek waivers tied to a push by Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. against the proliferation of hyper-processed foods in American diets.
Six states — Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Texas and Florida — have already received waivers this year to restrict the terms of their SNAP offerings, joining other states with pre-existing waivers such as Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Idaho and Utah.
