Mason City Police Capt. Mike McKelvey was formally appointed Tuesday as the city's next police chief.
McKelvey will become the acting police chief when current chief Jeff Brinkley retires Nov. 14. His title will change to police chief on Feb. 10.
The City Council unanimously approved McKelvey's appointment.
"I think this is a wonderful move that we are making," said Fourth Ward Council Member John Jaszewski.
He said McKelvey, who has spent his entire law enforcement career of nearly 30 years with the MCPD, is "the perfect choice for this position" due to his temperament, experience and intelligence.
Jaszewski also said he is glad the city is promoting from within.
During his career with the MCPD, McKelvey has been a field officer, crime scene investigator and K-9 handler
