Police in Norwich have a new type of patrolling to help build a stronger relationship with the public: An electric ice cream truck that will be serving up frozen treats during community events and periodically during neighborhood patrols.

The Norwich Police Department unveiled its Ice Cream Patrol — a Chevrolet BrightDrop believed to be the first all-electric, police operated ice cream truck in the country — during the department’s National Night Out on Tuesday at Howard T. Brown Park, according to Lt. Kyle Besse.

“We are proud to lead the way with a program that blends sustainability, innovation and community policing,” Besse said. “The Ice Cream Patrol is more than a truck, it’s a bridge between our officers and the residents we serve.”
