BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - A retirement community in Blacksburg continues to combat food insecurity among its seniors. New funding assistance from Food Lion is helping its efforts.

Micah’s Pantry at Warm Hearth Village meets the needs of over 144 senior residents. Approximately one-third of its residents live on very low, fixed incomes.

WDBJ7 first reported on the pantry’s opening in 2022. Resident Sandy Berkowitz has witnessed its growth firsthand.

“Before I think all we could get were paper towels, maybe toilet paper, canned goods, maybe a few other shelf items, but we never got fresh vegetables, and we never got desserts or anything like that. So, it has become a much bigger part of what we’re able to get,” said Berkowitz.
