SEATTLE — Eighty years after the United States dropped the atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, killing 140,000 people by the end of 1945, a Seattle community gathered Wednesday evening to transform historical tragedy into hope for the future.

The event, called "From Hiroshima to Hope," took place on the shores of Green Lake, where approximately 1,500 people prepared lanterns labeled in Japanese with words such as love, bond, truth and friendship. Each lantern represented wishes for peace in honor of the tens of thousands of atomic bombing victims.

Among the attendees was Toru Sakamoto, who moved to Seattle from Japan in January with his family. By chance, they found themselves at the ceremony on the anniversary of the first bombing of their home country.
