The Fairbanks North Star Borough has applied for an $8.5 million U.S. Defense Department grant to help fund a long-planned animal shelter replacement.

Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins told the borough’s Animal Control Commission the goal on Monday, noting the grant application comes with a proposed intergovernmental service agreement with Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base for additional animal control powers.

“There are some needs on those bases for additional animal control authority and a place to put those animals to help assist with the readiness of those bases,” Hopkins said. “For families that need to deploy or get transferred, having a new shelter with additional space and care capacity shows there is a need for the Department of Defense.”
