A North Pole City Council ordinance intended to improve traffic safety could end the practice of individuals and groups collecting money from cars at intersections, medians and roundabouts.

North Pole Mayor Larry Terch introduced the ordinance on Monday, citing concerns from the city’s fire and police chiefs.

“The objective of this is for the safety of our kids and residents who are out there,” Terch said.

Fire Chief Chad Heineken said the ordinance “comes after multiple years of concerns for public safety.”

“This summer again, we’ve seen several concerns where well-deserved organizations are fundraising that we want to support, but are interacting with motor vehicles in traffic, specifically the roundabouts,” Heineken said.
