SMITHFIELD – As students start preparing to return to class, the district is again navigating administrative turnover, primarily at the high school but across the district’s leadership ranks.

Since summer 2023, Smithfield High School has seen four assistant principals, two principals, the elimination of a key student discipline role, and the loss of a CTE director. Now, as the 2025-2026 school year approaches, there are fresh concerns about whether the remaining staff can keep up.

The high school’s leadership changes have been frequent. Dan Kelley resigned as principal in June 2023 to take a position at the University of Rhode Island. He was replaced by interim Principal Jose Libano, who served from July to December. Dan Geraghty stepped in the following month.
