WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Police in the District said one person was hospitalized with serious injuries after a road rage incident escalated to a shooting and a crash in Northeast D.C. overnight.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) told DC News Now that on Aug. 7, just minutes before 1 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 2700 block of Benning Rd. Northeast.

Once in the area, police located a person suffering from a gunshot wound and another who had been hit by a car near Benning Road and Maryland Avenue.

As the investigation developed, officers learned that both victims, a man riding a scooter and a driver of a vehicle, were involved in a dispute. The situation escalated, and the man took out a gun and shot the driver, according to police.
