OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - As complaints of phone and computer scams increase the NY State Police warn residents to be cautious of pop-up alerts.

The New York State Police have been receiving an increased number of complaints regarding phone and computer scams. These alleged scams are coming from pop-up alerts that can appear on devices.

According to Troopers those scammed are told by scammers that their personal information is on the dark web and that their identity has been compromised. Troopers also say that scammers have even targeted victim's bank accounts resulting in them loosing substantial amounts of money.

State Police urge the public to be cautious and report any suspicious pop-up alerts that appear.
