GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Forsyth County woman pleaded guilty to stealing money from COVID-19 funding on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The Department of Justice said Shakerra Jones, 48, pleaded guilty to wire fraud.

It said Jones submitted fake COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) applications to Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

The funds were supposed to go to low-income residents to help pay for rent or utilities during the pandemic.

She took more than $135,000 in funds.

A judge will sentence her in November. She will face a maximum sentence of twenty years.
