PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Department of Education says it is working to develop an “awareness plan” to combat the growing number of children using nicotine pouches.

A nicotine pouch is a powder that dissolves in your mouth when it’s tucked between your lips and gums, which allows the nicotine to absorb into your bloodstream. A recent study found that nicotine pouch ingestions increased by 760% from 2020 to 2023 in children ages six and younger.

The Banner Poison & Drug Information Center reports that the number of calls they’ve received this year related to nicotine pouch poisoning in kids has nearly doubled.
