ALBANY – The union that represents the state’s correctional officers has released a report that maintains that members went on strike en masse in February due to dismal working conditions that have been deteriorating for years.
The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association’s (NYSCOPBA) 11-page report identified factors such as “crushing” mandatory overtime, surging violence, staffing crisis, and state neglect, which were familiar themes during the walkouts throughout the state.
The conditions were a result of union leadership listening to thousands of members over several years.
