BEAUFORT, N.C. (WITN) - An obituary says a Beaufort man has died, two weeks after police say he was attacked at a downtown bar.
Michael Johnson was at ECU Health Medical Center with severe injuries. Warrants say the 49-year-old man suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw, a brain bleed, a stroke, and was on a ventilator.
The obituary says the man died yesterday.
Beaufort police on Monday charged James Jones with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
They say it happened on the evening of July 22nd and started as a physical fight between the two men at Finz bar and Grill on Front Street. A news release says it escalated in the parking lot where Jones hit Johnson in the head with a closed fist.
Police say the man fell backward, hitting his head on the concrete.
