The person spearheading a voter initiative to abolish property taxes in Michigan is running for governor.

Ax MI Tax Executive Director Karla Wagner announced Tuesday she filed to run as a Republican candidate in Michigan’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

But Wagner’s candidacy is less about winning the governorship and more about getting exposure for the Ax MI Tax constitutional amendment and enough signatures for it to be on the November 2026 ballot.

“I look at it like this, I didn’t do Ax MI Tax to run for governor. I’m running for governor because of Ax MI Tax,” Wagner said Tuesday, Aug. 5 in a video on social media.
