NEW ORLEANS —
The New Orleans City Council has overruled a recent veto by Mayor LaToya Cantrell over an ordinance passed involving the city attorney.
The city council voted unanimously to overrule the mayor's veto of an ordinance that would adjust the responsibilities of the city attorney's office. Advertisement
Right now, the mayor can appoint and remove the city attorney. The council wants to strengthen the independence of the position and have voters decide that matter in a November election.
The mayor claimed the move violates the Home Rule Charter, but the council president pushed back, saying the amendment can't violate the charter because the amendment itself changes the charter.
The city attorney’s responsibilities will now be on the ballot in November.
