Certain truck drivers will soon have to find another route as PennDOT takes action to stop tall trailers and vehicles from crashing into the low-clearance bridge on Front Street in Harrisburg near the UPMC hospital.
For decades, trucks and tractor-trailers have been regularly hitting and damaging the bridge, causing traffic backups.
PennDOT spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler told PennLive Thursday that additional signs will be placed farther ahead of South Front Street, beginning at Maclay Street, to warn truck drivers it’s illegal for them to continue on the road roughly four miles ahead. That should give drivers enough warning to find another route.
She said other signs will be visible along Front Street near other connecting streets, including Forster Street, which is when Schreffler re
