MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott has received sharp criticism this week for agreeing to provide personal information about state recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to the federal government.
Money from the federal government funds the food assistance program, once known as food stamps, but states administer it. In Vermont it is called 3SquaresVT.
In all, 20 state attorneys general have sued the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to block the data from being shared, given SNAP is a program administered by state governments and bound by data privacy laws. While Vermont has joined in on many such suits during the second Trump administration, it did not this time. Scott is a Republican, but is often critical of the Republican Trump administration.
