PORT DOUGLAS, N.Y. (WCAX) - An invasive insect that feeds on hemlock and spruce trees has made its way to New York’s North Country.

The hemlock wooly adelgid sucks sap from the trees, eventually killing them in three to 10 years.

DEC officials say they found the tiny aphid-like insects on private property in Port Douglass this summer. The only other known case in in Lake George, at least 50 miles away.

“I expect there are probably other locations out there in the area that we have not yet found. We are actively searching for more infestation in this area to limit where it stops and starts and that is really important to making any sort of management decisions in the area as well,” said the DEC’s Jason Denham.
