CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) --Safety is top of mind as students and staff in Charleston County head back to school and the district is rolling out two new programs this year to ensure children are safe.

Charleston County School District officials will begin implementing a badge system for every school official on all 90 school sites this year. The badge will be similar to a wearable panic button with multiple features staff can use to call for help.

"The first alert is an indication 'I'm an adult in this building and I need help from another adult.' That could be a situation like a behavior issue, a medical issue or something that I require help from another adult," explained Michael Reidenbach, the executive director of security and emergency management at Charleston County School District.
