CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD — Charleston County Schools start classes next week, but some parents may face transportation headaches before the first bell even rings. District leaders say they’re dealing with a bus driver shortage and the possibility of a strike.

In Mount Pleasant alone, nearly 20 drivers are needed. If drivers walk off the job, that shortage could grow. Officials say they’re working on plans to prevent disruptions as students head back to class on August 12.

About 22,000 Charleston County students are expected to ride the bus this year. But some routes could be impacted as First Student the company contracted to provide bus services — continues negotiations with the General Teamsters Local Union 509, which represents many of the district’s drivers.
