PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - The U.S. Department of Justice reports that 60% of American children have been exposed to violence, crime, or abuse in their homes or communities, with one in 10 children having been victims of violence themselves.
Moreover, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network reports that around 25% of American children will experience at least one traumatic event by age 16.
Trillium Place Young Minds Center Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Tahari Allen said trauma can come from indirect or direct violence. She said trauma can also be intergenerational, passed down within family and community experiences.
